What is a toner

The toner is a special printing medium for the electrostatic printing process. It is required for all laser printers and photocopiers. This consists of a very fine powder with a very small particle size.
It is interesting that the dry toner powder is very fluid and therefore behaves like a liquid. It consists of various pigments, synthetic resins, binders and magnetic metal oxides.
High demands are made in the production . It is known that laser printers achieve very high quality printing results with their toner cartridges .
The toner must therefore not draw any moisture during the printing process, must remain color-fast and should only have a very small amount of plastic applied to the carrier material.
One of the greatest advantages is that the color toner remains absolutely smudge-proof after it has been fused . Even external moisture can usually not affect the printout. So it is not surprising that laser printouts are used outdoors, among other things.

Is there only black toner?

The first laser printers could only print in monochrome or black and white. The prints impressed with their deep, high-contrast black. Today, color laser printers have also become affordable, so you can print in color. Depending on the print resolution, excellent color photos can be printed out with a color laser printer .
So that all colors can be displayed, a laser printer needs the following color cartridges in addition to the basic color using black toner :

Cyan toner
Magenta toner
Yellow toner

What types of toner are there?

When people talk about toner, most people only think of the sturdy plastic containers in which the fine toner powder is located. However, the toner cartridges must also be differentiated again.

The one-component toner

In addition to the fine pigment powder, a one-component toner also consists of magnetic additives. As soon as these particles come close to the magnetic core of the developer roller, the particles straighten up. The rotating roller creates friction which leads to a negative charge on the particles.
The erected pigments of the toner then adhere to the rotating photoconductor drum.
In the case of one-component toner, it is usually only the printing color black . The developer already contained in the toner would falsify color pigments.

The two-component toner

Color laser printers use two-component toners. The developer and color are separated so that color falsifications are excluded . This special toner is also required for color copiers. The developer is made up of fine iron particles . While in the first color laser printers the iron particles had to be manually filled into the developer unit, these are already included in the developer unit today. In this way, only the ink needs to be added through the ink cartridge.
With modern laser printers, the developer unit is replaced in addition to the toner cartridge . The correct mixing ratio is important. Too high a proportion of iron particles in the developer can damage the photo conductor drum. Newer printers take over this measurement of the mixing ratio automatically.

The transfer fluid

The so-called transfer liquid represents an interesting alternative. These are colored pigments in dispersed form , which are kept particularly small.
The exposed image drum of a laser printer rotates in this transfer liquid and absorbs the pigment color.
Since no subsequent fixation is necessary with this printing process and the particle size is much smaller than with the other toner particles, these laser printers can produce a much higher print quality .

How does the toner actually get onto the paper?

The laser printing principle is also known as the Xerox process . The first laser copiers were developed by the American company Haloid Xerox in the 1950s. Electro-photography was henceforth called xerography. In 1961 the company was renamed Xerox. The image drum coated with a photo conductor is one of the most important components of a laser printer or copier .

The charging of the imaging drum

Different colored toners
The photo conductor is the coating of the imaging drum. This has to be electrostatically charged with the help of a thin wire, also called a charging corona. A corona discharge is generated by a high voltage . Recently, a charging roller has also been used instead of a wire, since this process generates virtually no harmful ozone.

The exposure of the imaging drum

Even before it is printed out, the electronics of a laser printer already know what the subsequent print image will look like. As a result, the charge on the photoconductor on the image drum is erased at all the places where the fine toner powder is supposed to adhere later. The discharge takes place through a kind of exposure. The more light falls on the photoconductor of the imaging drum, the more it is discharged. Older laser printers actually use a fine laser beam for exposure. Today’s laser printers generate this exposure with the help of light-emitting diodes.
The later print image is projected onto the photoconductor or the image drum via a rotating mirror . Halftone screening can therefore also be used to create shades of gray. With professional laser printers, color gradations are made by gradually reducing the charge over 256 levels. One speaks here of 265 gray levels.

Developing using the developer unit

The image drum with the photoconductor coating is now exposed with the print image. A rotation brings the photoconductor close to the developer unit. The static charge pulls the fine toner powder onto the photoconductor. This also explains why there are minimal magnetic particles in the toner powder . The developer unit also takes control of the contrast range and prevents too much toner from sticking to one place. Synthetic resin in the toner provides electrical insulation.

The toner transfer onto the paper

Depending on the design of the laser printer, the photoconductor brings the adhering toner directly into contact with the paper. There are also models in which the toner is first transferred to a transfer roller or a transfer belt and only then transferred to the paper. Modern color laser printers have four consecutive printing units for the colors black, cyan, magenta and yellow. This means that color prints can be made in one pass.
When using a transfer ribbon, the toner is applied to the paper by an electrostatic charge. This means that the fine toner particles are now on the paper to be printed on.

The fixation of the toner on the paper

Subsequent fixation is required so that the toner powder remains permanently and smudge-proof on the paper. Therefore, the paper is moved to the fixing unit. This usually consists of two rollers coated with Teflon or silicone rubber. One of the rollers can be heated to a temperature of around 180 degrees Celsius . In this way, the fine toner particles melt and perpetuate themselves permanently with the paper. So that the toner does not stick to the rubberized rollers, the upper roller is provided with a slightly repelling electrostatic charge and the lower roller for the back of the paper is provided with a slightly attractive electrostatic charge.
Newer devices only get by with one heating roller, while the underside consists of a non-stick coated tape. It should be noted that the fuser unit wears out over time and can then no longer achieve the required heating power . It must then be replaced. The fusing of the toner on the paper can be recognized by the fact that the printed page feels quite warm after it has been ejected.

Final work

After the smudge-proof print page has been issued, all components are fully discharged . The residual toner on the components is diverted into a special waste toner container . This can later be fed back into the recycling cycle.

Correct use of toner

Exemplary printerToner consists of various components that ensure an excellent print image, but as fine dust they are not harmless to humans. Under no circumstances should you handle loose toner powder , especially since this can also lead to severe soiling. Therefore, toner cartridges consist of a closed container made of robust plastic.
Depending on the manufacturer, the housing can have different shapes and sizes. The elongated shape of the bar has proven particularly useful. Lateral plastic guide lugs ensure that the toner cartridge can be inserted correctly in the laser printer’s toner slot. With color laser printers, a separate toner cartridge is required for each printing color. These are usually inserted into the toner cartridge one after the other. With other laser printers, the individual cartridges must be pushed into the openings on the side.
These cartridges are usually offered in cardboard packaging , on which all important manufacturer information can be found. In the case of color cartridges, the correct printing ink can also be found at a glance. Each cartridge is once again sealed in a light-tight film packaging . Before you can insert a toner cartridge into your laser printer, you must completely remove it from its packaging.
Inside the toner cartridge, the fine toner powder is usually not evenly distributed in the housing due to the transport. This can lead to difficulties during commissioning and, in the worst case, to an unclean print image. As a result, most manufacturers recommend that you shake a fresh toner cartridge horizontally and vertically a few times . As a result, the particles are optimally distributed inside and, if necessary, can easily reach the photoconductor of the imaging drum from the toner outlet.
The toner outlet is protected against unintentional leakage of toner powder on the transport route by a seal . Understandably, this seal must be removed before insertion. There are several ways to do this. Sometimes you have to pull off an adhesive strip or pull a plastic strip out of the side of the cartridge housing.
By slightly angling the new toner cartridge, it can be safely inserted in the cartridge slot. Then carefully press the cartridge housing down so that it clicks into place . You can then close the cover of the toner compartment again and start printing.

What to do with empty toner cartridges?

A used toner cartridge should never be disposed of in the black residual waste bin. The production of this plastic housing is relatively complex and expensive. If you have ordered fresh toner from FairToner , you can use the outer packaging very well to store the used toner cartridge. In this way, an empty cartridge can be safely returned to the recycling cycle.
Since the plastic housing is usually in good condition, empty cartridges can be refilled with new toner powder with little effort. These will then be offered later under the name refill or rebuilt toner .
